8 Comic Books You Should Read
If you’re looking to branch out into new comic books, or just want to remember your favorites, here are 8 comic books you must read! You’ll find both timeless classics and more recent comics that are sure to get you hooked! As always, don’t forget to tell us your favorite in the comments!
1) The Dark Knight Returns
In 1986, The Dark Knight Returns was published and it changed comic books forever. In an era that had already been heralded by Frank Miller’s Daredevil run in 1979, The Dark Knight Returns brought a new and edgier take on superheroes to mainstream popularity. The series tells a story about an aging Batman who is called out of retirement when Gotham City is overrun by criminals led by someone calling himself The Joker. This comic book serves as a template for all superhero comics to come after it, which makes it one of your must-read books! If you haven’t read it yet, get moving! You don’t want to miss out on one of the biggest cultural phenomena in modern history.
2) Kingdom Come
Kingdom Come is a series of comic books set in an alternate universe where superheroes fight one another over various causes. It is especially notable for its controversial storyline, with violence and sex between superheroes common plot points. Because of these plot points, it is not recommended for younger readers (16+). However, older readers will be treated to a thrilling narrative that explores how well-known characters respond to the world falling apart around them. Not only are you given a glimpse into what makes these heroes tick, but you also get a chance to see what they’re capable of when pushed past their limits.
3) Sandman
Neil Gaiman's Sandman series is a game-changer for comic books and fantasy fiction. The series ran from 1989 to 1996 and follows Dream, one of seven Endless, on his journey to reclaim his lost objects of power—one of which is a box that contains all that has ever been dreamed by anyone anywhere in existence. It's an awesome adventure (with some sci-fi elements), filled with unique takes on familiar mythology and powerful, touching moments (all told through glorious art). Give it a read!
4) V for Vendetta
A graphic novel written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd, V for Vendetta details a dystopian future in Great Britain. It was published in 1988, after Margaret Thatcher’s tenure as prime minister but before her death. The world has become increasingly Orwellian: totalitarian, corporatist, and repressively controlled; its people are disempowered and uneducated. In short, it’s not much different from reality. V for Vendetta tells of a man who dons a Guy Fawkes mask to fight against his oppressive government. It’s an excellent piece of literature that is equal parts exciting and thought-provoking.
5) Swamp Thing
A young scientist was transformed into a plant-like monster after exposure to strange chemicals in a swamp. Like Swamp Thing, he fights various supernatural menaces and helps preserve his home environment of The Green, an overgrown and abandoned stretch of Louisiana swampland populated by unique creatures. Though he possesses superhuman strength due to being composed entirely of vegetable matter and wearing a cape made from plants, Swamp Thing is actually more an elemental force than an actual superhero. While not overly powerful in comparison to other superheroes, he is able to heal and reshape parts of his body at will; even though it may take weeks for him to regrow a missing arm or leg, they are indistinguishable from their real counterparts.
6) Sin City
Marv, a tough-as-nails ex-cop, can't be killed. Not because he has some sort of superhuman power that protects him from harm. He's just lucky...so far. Then he meets Nancy, a prostitute with an uncanny knack for survival who leads him on a wild adventure through Sin City--the den of seduction and sin made famous by Frank Miller's comic books series--with danger at every turn. Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids) directs this sensational film version of Miller's classic graphic novel featuring Mickey Rourke as Marv and Elijah Wood as Johnny, Kevin Gage as Old Town protector Cardinal Roark and Clive Owen as Dwight.
7) Maus
Maus by Art Spiegelman is a two-volume graphic novel that depicts Jews’ experiences during and after World War II. The story is told from a unique perspective: Vladek Spiegelman, a Holocaust survivor. Vladek’s story is often told through flashbacks and his current struggles with his son. It’s filled with dark humor and unforgettable characters (the animal-costumed Nazis are particularly disturbing). Maus has received critical acclaim for being one of, if not the most, important comic books are ever written, exploring new possibilities for how to tell stories in words and pictures. It was awarded both a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. Readers who appreciate literary comic books that push boundaries will enjoy it tremendously.
8) Watchmen
Alan Moore is one of the comic’s greatest writers. He’s also a recluse and difficult to reach, which is why his entry on our list is so shocking. The fact that he actually agreed to be involved in Watchmen, a series with more than 25 years under its belt, should tell you everything you need to know about it. Set in an alternate history where superheroes exist and have been outlawed after their existence led to massive destruction, crime, and death around America, Watchmen tells a story unlike any other superhero tale out there (except perhaps Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns). The graphic novel centers on legendary hero Rorschach as he tries to find evidence of who framed him for murder during a mission gone awry.
